Greeneration Summit: Youth Empowerment on Climate Change

by Bam Azores | 26-11-2012 14:16 recommendations 0

I got to attend the Greeneration Summit in Manila last Thursday together with youth from other high schools in my City. We represented the Friends of the Seven Lakes Foundation Youth of San Pablo City which is also called City of the Seven Lakes. The summit was organized by the CLIMATE CHANGE COMMISSION (CCC) as part of the Climate Change Consciousness Week in our country.

Greeneration is a great word coined from Green Generation!

The best speakers were there from morning until late afternoon. And I got to meet many of them too.  They talked about topics like: Understanding climate change and the impact on youth, Youth's Role in addressing Climate change, Research and Climate change, Addressing Climate change through Responsible Social media, Arts and Climate change, Youth's Involvement in the International Arena, Role of education in addressing Climate Change, Government's Initiatives on Education and Climate Change, Call for Youth, and the Story of the Creation of the Climate Change Commission.

We learned so much.  Everyone told us that Climate Change is here now and we cannot ignore that. And since we are the youth and the most vulnerable, we have to do something about it and raise consciousness around us about Climate Change and what we can do to mitigate its effects.

Commissioner Sano reminded us of what the national hero of the Philippines Jose Rizal said: "It is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal". So let us all focus our efforts on a great ideal like protecting our environment.

Trivia: Why do we measure the increase of temperatures from 1860 to the present? Because the thermometer was only invented in 1860.  =D Haha! Big smile after a serious topic!
