Lagos Going Green

by | 21-10-2016 17:18 recommendations 0

Lagos state is widely known as one of the rapidly developing states in Nigeria since the independence due to the influence and domination of the whites especially in the 1960?s. In late 1990?s, it became noticeable the state needs to enforce its environmental laws due to negative effects of climate change like flooding, air pollution, noise pollution etc. caused by industrial actions leading to health complications in the citizens.

In early 2000?s, the then governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, established Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) whose vision is to develop and implement sustainable waste management strategies targeted at improving public health standard and are committed to achieving efficient waste management systems by employing adaptable solutions and best practices as well as encouraging regional integration and customer focused service delivery methods. LAWMA is one of the agencies in Lagos that focus on achieving a sustainable environment in the state by working with Non-profit organizations, researchers, and entrepreneurs. One of the LAWMA?s best approaches are to operate in an environmentally friendly way, striving to ensure that the air soil and water around all our disposal sites are free from contaminants and are less susceptible to pollution.

Another agency that focuses on achieving a sustainable environment is the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) which acts as the environmental regulator for the Lagos State of Nigeria. They conduct studies on the air quality of the State such as air quality sampling and monitoring in designated grids and develop air quality management database for the State. The agency also develops an inventory of emissions for statutory and mobile sources and modeling or configuration of simple interactive spreadsheets in partnership with research organizations and agencies.

LASEPA? vision is to build a portfolio of sound environmental management program and projects in the development of a sustainable environment in conjunction with other arms of Government, regulatory organizations and international agencies. To achieve its institutional responsibility the agency is committed to the clean development and accredits Environmental Consultants that will not compromise on professionalism, while their activities are closely monitored and reviewed annually by the Agency.

There is a high optimism Lagos will become one of the states in Africa to achieve a green and sustainable environment where people can live healthily and the citizen will have basic utilities for a good living.

great efforts though Lagos is one of the most populated state in Nigeria hence waste management is not done in effectively way . The resultant effects is the development of suburbs, slums and ghettos which leads to poorest environmental conditions .Hope Lagos waste management authority, citizens and those agencies like LASEPA will work effectively to attain sustainable goals or development.
