Drought continues in Uganda

by | 22-02-2017 19:02 recommendations 1

About 65 percent of the people living north eastern karamoja region go without a meal a day. Karamoja is a pastoral community. The dry spell that started in 2016 has been carried on till to day. The food shortages have increased from 1.3 million people in 2016 to 1.5 million people today suffering the challenge. However much Uganda has been the leading food producer in the region, this has not changed the fact that a lot of deaths are arising because of the challenge. This has been due to the climate challenges. Competitions between the animals and people for the food and water consumption is also on an increase. The dynamics of the weather have changed and this has out spotted the farmers. A majority of people in Uganda depend on agriculture as a source of income and source of food. The government is aware of all this but there are no permanent solutions being suggested. There is a prediction of receiving the rains in March but there is no sign of this. The large number of forest degradation, encroachment on wetlands, contamination of water with wastes. Increase in carbon foot prints and increased use of fossil fuels has led to climate change in the country.Ugandans therefore need to learn from experience. The environment has slapped us back. There is therefore need to conserve and preserve the environmentally sensitive areas to avoid the future from being given a heavier slap than what the present generation has received. There is also need for government intervention to find ways of providing water tanks for water harvesting and also more farming methods that do not spoil the soils.

I hope, as predicted, it rains in March in north eastern karamoja region, suffering from drought for over a year now. It's really sad.
The developed nations must share the modern tech like Cloud Seeding to ease their pain.

It's sad to hear the harsh environmental condition of Uganda, scientific agriculture techniques are essentially required to avoid hunger.

I was also reading somewhere that drought in Uganda, is not a new phenomenon since it happens almost every year, especially nowadays. However, this year's (2016 onwards) drought is different from previous droughts as it caused by natural phenomenon called La Ni, which is followed by Eli-no and characterized by long drought and extreme heat.
Very sad. Let's hope and pray that God showers his blessings in the form of rain on this beautiful country. Take care.
