Malaysia and the Paris Agreement

by | 26-06-2017 02:12 recommendations 0

Accord de Paris(Paris Climate Accord ), or in English - Paris Agreement has been a hot button around the globe. Especially after the United States' withdrawal from Paris Agreement. There might be various rumours wide spreading and causing misconceptions regarding the Paris Agreement. Therefore, this article will be unveiling the misunderstanding of Paris Agreement.

The idea of Paris Agreement started in the late-30th November and early 12 December of 2015 when the idea was drafted.1 After a year, the threshold for entry into force of the Paris Agreement was achieved during 5th October 2016. Right after a month, the Paris Agreement entered into force on 4th November 2016. The first session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1) took place in Marrakech, Morocco from 15-18 November 2016. 2

Paris Agreement mainly aims to achieve three things:

  1. Holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 ?C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 ?C above pre-industrial levels, recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change
  2. Increasing the ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change and foster climate resilience and low greenhouse gas emissions development, in a manner that does not threaten food production
  3. Making finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development. 3
In overall, Paris Agreement plans to tackle climate change, adapt to climate change and reduce cost needed to repair environment from pollution.

On the 1st June 2017, US(United States) leave the Paris Agreement 4 and caused huge impact on society, especially on the party in Paris Agreement. This is because US plays a huge role in Paris Agreement. However, Natural Resources and Environment Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tunku Jaafar says that "A lot of big countries like China as well as the European Union can take over the role of the United States in leading the fight against global warming."5 Malaysia seems to stay positive after the incident.

Malaysia side with Paris Agreement as early as November 2015.In November 2015, Malaysia submitted its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) to UNFCCC, with a commitment to reduce GHG emissions by 45 % by 2030.3 This will be achieved through reductions from the energy, agriculture and the land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sectors.6 Malaysia's palm oil industry plays a major role in reduction of carbon footprint of palm oil . According to Malaysia, by 2020, when palm oil mills in Malaysia are all fully-equipped with biogas capture facilities, the carbon footprint for Malaysian palm oil is estimated towards reduction by 53%.7

You might be thinking that only politicians, scientists or leaders are able to help the Paris Agreement. However, it takes all kinds to make a world. You can also take part in assisting the Paris Agreement. See how.8

Cheng, thank you for your report. I could well grasp a story line of the Paris agreement. Also many links and references you have mentioned are helpful. We usually agree to the fact that the Paris Agreement is good for humanity, but have no idea how we could contribute to it. One can find some answers in your article.
