Endangered species of Nepal

by Prayash Pathak (Chalise) | 20-10-2017 23:44 recommendations 0

It is well known to all of us that my country Nepal is a small landlocked country located in the lap of Himalayas in South East Asia.  The wide range of physiographic and physiological diversity of Nepal has blessed its ecosystem with wide range of flora and faunas. The environmental variation and diversity has permitted this wildlife to co-exist side by side with the humans. So in spite of its small size and locational barriers Nepal has proved to be a rich country in term of wildlife richness. But most recently our rich flora and faunas are being affected by heavy smuggling and trafficking.  Increasing population and aggressive clearing of forest is making the situation further worse. Altogether 27 mammals, 9 bird species and 3 reptiles are kept in the endangered list.
Among the list of endangered species tigers and leopards area at the top. This are targeted for their skins and bones that are used in decoration and western medicines. Musk deer are also in the top order of list. Musk is an exotic expensive powder extracted from the abdomen of the deer that is used in making perfumes. Similarly, Himalayan black bear is also in the blink of extinction, which is mainly poached for its gall bladder that is a source of expensive oriental medicine. Red panda present in a very few number in the Langtang National Park, Makalu Barun National Park and Sagarmatha National Park  are loosing their population due to the fine skin and hairs.
Likewise one of the most famous species of Nepal, One horned rhino are being targeted by hunters for their skin, nail and horn. This are sold at the black market at a very high price. Skin of one horned rhino is used to make bullet proof vest. Similarly Asiatic elephant that are not given so much protection and priority are being easily hunted by the poachers. Asiatic elephant is the largest land mammal of world that is hunted for its tusk. Among the birds, " Kande Bhyakur", the bird found only in Nepal is also in the list of endangerment. Similarly Bengal florican, White Strok and Sronus Crane are also in the list. Among the reptiles, Ghorial crocodile, Golden Monitor Lizard and Asistic Rock Python are listed.
The government of Nepal is doing a great deed in protection and preservation of such endangered species. A large number of rules and regulations are already being implemented. There is strict prohibition in poaching and marketing of endangered species. People found guilty are charged according to the law. And it is an honor to write that Nepal has achieved  quite a success in protecting its endangered species. The number of One horned Rhino and tiger have increased dramatically. But the one aspect in which Nepalese government is lagging behind is the documentation and protection of the endangered flora species. Many traditional medicinal plants like Yarsa Gumba, Sarpagabdha, Panch Aule, etc are being marketed, processed and exported illegally. No any strict rules are made to control their illegal harvesting and marketing.

Hi, Prayash! It's sad to know that for years, many animals have been poached to the point that they have become endangered. Animals are usually poached for human greed, in order to obtain fancy coats or decorations. The medicines obtained from poached animals are also not justifiable, as they are not the only cure available. With the advancement in modern medicine, these animal medicines are no longer mandatory. Yet, the animals are still being killed because the medicines made from them are considered rare and can be sold at very expensive prices. People must stop sacrificing the lives of animals to fulfill their greed. Until everyone's mindset can be set right, the best way to stop poaching will be through laws. I'm glad to hear that Nepal's government has acted in this direction, protecting many endangered species. Thanks for your report!
