Garbage Disposal Problems in India

by | 20-09-2013 19:53 recommendations 0

In India, improper garbage disposal is a recurring environment-related problem which plagues almost every city I have travelled to. Major Indian cities like Mumbai and Delhi and small towns like Lakhisarai, all of them alike face this problem. The most common way of disposing garbage in these cities seems to be collective burning in a heap. The local garbage is collected and put in a heap which is burnt, leading to air pollution. Other improper ways of garbage disposal include forced drainage of garbage through the locality drains which leads to blockage of the drains and subsequent water-logging in the area. This water later becomes ground for breeding of disease-causing mosquitoes.
In my current city Patna, there are some 'fixed' places where the garbage collecting vehicles run by the Municipal Corporation dump garbage everyday. Those places are not meant for the purpose of dumping garbage but are tacitly thought of as being so. This mindset of the common people is the invitation to rampant land pollution in these cities. We need to work together and make the people and the authorities aware of the environmental concerns associated with improper disposal of garbage. We have been running late in this task of ours and it is time we started.

I know a project in Thailand that they collect garbage and turn them into souvenir for tourists. It's a very interesting ideas.
India is also a place of travelling, so you can consider that idea :)
