[Free report] Are livestock farm threat to environment?

by Sachin Regmi | 22-06-2019 20:54 recommendations 0

Hello In this report we will be talking about How the livestock farm is a threat to our environment? What makes them such? and what are the ways we can mitigate the effects? so let's get going!

Livestock farm are basically agriculture enterprise with animal as unit of production. Animals during the course of food digestion emit a green house gas called methane. Methane has heat holding capacity. The heat from the sun gets entrapped in them and they slowly release them. A cow does on overage release between 70 and 120 kg of Methane per year. Methane is a greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide (CO2). But the negative effect on the climate of Methane is 23 times higher than the effect of CO2. Therefore, the release of about 100 kg Methane per year for each cow is equivalent to about 2'300 kg CO2 per year.

Let's compare this value of 2'300 kg CO2: The same amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) is generated by burning 1'000 liters of petrol. With a car using 8 liters of petrol per 100 km, you could drive 12'500 km per year (7'800 miles per year).

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) agriculture is responsible for 18% of the total release of greenhouse gases world-wide (this is more than the whole transportation sector). Cattle-breeding is taking a major factor for these greenhouse gas emissions according to FAO. Says Henning Steinfeld, Chief of FAO's Livestock Information and Policy Branch and senior author of the report: "Livestock are one of the most significant contributors to today's most serious environmental problems. Urgent action is required to remedy the situation."

Livestock now use 30 percent of the earth's entire land surface, mostly permanent pasture but also including 33 percent of the global arable land used to producing feed for livestock, the report notes. As forests are cleared to create new pastures, it is a major driver of deforestation, especially in Latin America where, for example, some 70 percent of former forests in the Amazon have been turned over to grazing.

There is simple solution to this problem. Establishing bio-gas plant alone solves 90% of the problem !!

    Hi Sachin,

Thank you for uploading another great report to the website. It is very surprising to hear that the amount of methane and Carbon dioxide released from cows and cattles are massive and this actually contribute to global warming. I think it is important to take care of livestock in a more effective and efficient manner nowadays. I appreciate that you brought up an interesting topic.

    Hello Sachin

Thank you for your interesting report on how livestock farms can harm the environment. The amount of methane and Carbon dioxide released from cows and cattles are one of the main causes of air pollution. I have read the news that in some country, the fart tax has been established to minimize the impacts of livestock farms on air pollution. Eating less meats and planting bio-gas plants can be possible solutions. Keep up the good work!

    Good morning Sachin,

I hope you are well today,

I would first like to thank you for all the kind words you've given me so far. They mean alot.
Secondly, I would like to comment on the issue on livestock farming and its connection to climate change. I do agree with you, that global warming has bee impacted or expedited to a large extent, by agriculture. Moreover, the elimination of forests to supply us with meat and meat alternatives only defeats the purpose of forests as they are the lungs of the Earth.

Bio-gas plants is seen as a very good start-point solution, and we need to government to firstly understand its importance in combating climate change, and secondly, they need to implement this is strategic areas. Lastly involve society and educate them.

Thank you so much for reporting Sachin! I enjoyed reading your report!
    With gratitude,
    Rosa
