Youth and Environment

One day during the dark hours was having a good time with my grandmother talking. She said something that sent my mind into deep thinking. She told me that there was a dense and great forest in an area which now have low vegetation cover. It triggered my mind into a deeper thinking state asking my self unanswered questions. Will my son or daughter be able to see an tree or animals? What need to be done to protect the environment?  Fortunately in Zimbabwe there are some programmes being done to involve the youth in environment conservation. They will be discussed below.

The young generation is the one responsible to take this world to another level. Currently the world have suffered many environmental problems that need solutions to be provided to make it sustainable for the future generations to enjoy its benefits. Current programs in Zimbabwe for youths to take part in environmental  issues are discussed below.

Firstly there is Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is an organisation formed by an act of parliament to protect the environment make it sustainable for future generations.  EMA have empowered youths in Zimbabwe with environmental education and responsibility. The EMA education sector influenced the formation of clubs in schools. My school, Herman Gmeiner High School in Bindura there is EMA club that deals with waste control at school such as litter picking around the school and emptying litter bins. Also they enact rules at the school for example that no one should leave litter on ground and within two meters radius from where he/she is and all these rules aims to promote the culture of cleanliness to cope up with pollution.  There are rewards such as class of the week and best environmental keeper for the month all motivate youths to take part in environmental responsibility.

Further more EMA in order to gather facts for laws to be passed into the parliament they conduct essay and debate competitions around schools in Zimbabwe.  The competition involve any school child in Zimbabwe to participate and they are conducted nationally from inter schools to the national level.

Secondly youths around Zimbabwe take part in clean up campaigns and environmental responsibility actions. Most churches have their youths participate in national clean up campaigns,  voluntary cleanings ans educational activities for example Christ Embassy in Bindura have their youths teach people on green activities and take part in routine cleaning up the bus ranks and market places. More so, they participate in National tree planting day in December to reforestate.

Youths are taking part in many environmental responsibility activities and green activities through recycling. If one take a research on the streets can notice that many plastic pickers are youths. It can be debated that youths picking up the waste for recycling are not environmental responsible but they have money in their minds. In analysis one have to understand that recycling is a green practice and youths have choose to supplement their income through recycling which conserve the environment rather than environmental destroying projects to earn. Thus youths are participating in environmental sustainability programs.

It is a chance to serve the country and preserve the environment for future generations to come. Youths we are the change makers and protectors of our environment. Ask yourself the same questions I asked myself and think what the future will look like without any tree and animals, barely one cannot imagine.

    Hi Mufaro!
A youth have responsibility to pass this beautiful planet to the future generation.
Sometimes the situation seems to get worse, but youths have power to influence the society. They can inversely impact the adults or give influence to younger children.
I think the environmental programs in Zimbabwe is great. Those will bring huge benefit to local regions.
Thank you for the great report!
