Novel Coronavirus - The Situation In Ghana So Far

by Justice Obiri | 19-03-2020 10:30 recommendations 0

Having been able to escape the grasps of nCOVID-19 for several weeks, it was shocking to hear on the radio that Ghana had confirmed its first case on the 12th of March 2020. I used the word shocking because, checks at our borders were intensified whilst the checks at the airports were quite weak and that is how the coronavirus made its way into Ghana.

The country currently has only seven (7) confirmed cases of the virus, all of which were brought into the country by people coming into the country from Europe and by air. We had hope in the fact that the corona virus was yet to kill any African till yesterday 18th March 2020, a case popped up about the first death to be recorded in Africa from Burkina Faso which is also a neighbouring country of Ghana. On 16th and 17th March as well, three deaths of Ghanaians residing in Italy also brought some fear and panic amongst the citizens here.

I will like to congratulate Seoul of South Korea on how they have been able to control the outbreak and gladly say that Ghana is learning a thing or two from how you controlled the spread of the virus. The sudden breakout of this virus has brought an economic crisis in the country Ghana as well. Hand sanitizers which normally costs less than a dollar, are now being sold for more than five dollars making it quite difficult for the average earners to purchase these sanitizers for their homes. Schools and any other social gathering of more than 25 people have been abolished and would even be put into law on the 19th March 2020 at the parliament of Ghana by 13:00 hours. The closure and abolishment of some social gatherings have brought an economic crisis on people who earn money through these gatherings.

But like the saying "Prevention is better than cure" and with some good news about vaccines flying in from China, USA and India, we could only hope for the best.
The situation is calm here, even though the Ghana Health Authorities claim to have gotten over 300 contact tracing of the 7 people who have been confirmed to have the virus, none of the 300 people have test positive to the virus as of today 19th March, 2020.

This is a global crisis, and with time, it shall all come to an end.

Thank you and Green Cheers from Ghana.

Hi Justice Obiri, this is Sang Su Lee.

Corona virus is a very big problem currently all over the world. WHO warned Africa continents that if this virus spreads in Africa, many people would die because of lack of sufficient medical care service. I hope prevention works well as you are hoping and you be safe.

    Best,

    Sang Su
