Thematic Report: Green Architecture and the Environment

by Ilsiya Khalikova | 03-05-2021 04:56 recommendations 0

Not so long ago, the first eco-office in Kazakhstan was presented in Almaty.

In 2017, the opening of the first "green office" in the city, built from environmentally friendly materials of domestic production, took place in Almaty. The six-story building is fully powered by alternative energy sources and is the first of its kind in Kazakhstan.
The uniqueness of the building lies in the fact that during its operation, alternative energy sources will be used, which will make it possible to economically use natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the city's air basin.

The idea of the project belongs to a private entrepreneur Maxim Baryshev, and it was developed by Kazakhstani architects. The initiative to build a "green office" was born from the businessman at school age.

¡°The idea of ecology came to me at school, when I was writing an essay in the 5th grade on a free topic. The fact is that I live in the Seifullin-Ryskulov area of Almaty, where the ecology is bad and it happened that when it was snowing in the morning, the snow turned out to be black due to the operation of the CHP and I spoke in favor of moving all CHPs outside the city improve the environment. Already in 2011, I confirmed my desire to build an ecological office, ¡±said businessman, founder of the eco-office Maxim Baryshev.

Exactly five years passed from the idea to the implementation of the project. Now an ecologically clean building with a total area of 1200 square meters is located in the center of the city near the picturesque park named after M. Gandhi. One of the main ideas of the office is to minimize the consumption of natural resources, including water consumption. In addition, exclusive resources of exclusively Kazakhstani content were used during the construction.

For example, the office has a rainwater recycling system for reuse. Such water will be used for the irrigation of green spaces, as well as for flushing water in the toilet.

¡°As we know, in offices more than 80% of the water that is used indoors also goes to the toilet. Such use can be said to be blasphemous, so we installed a recycling system, ¡±says the founder of the eco-office.

The building houses 20 solar panels, which will generate most of the electricity needed for a normal life.

Collectors for converting solar energy into heat for heating water are installed on the roof of the office, thanks to which the office completely abandoned the city's heating supply.

The eco-office windows are equipped with multifunctional glass treated with a thin layer of silver, which creates a transparent filter. This approach ensures optimal indoor microclimate conditions at any time of the year and allows achieving high results in energy saving.

The building cost the businessman 280 million tenge (647 747 USD), but, according to Maxim Baryshev's expectations, the building should pay off in the next 7 years due to energy savings, as well as the refusal of rent. The savings are created not only because external components are used, but also internal ones. We use laptops in our work, which are very economical; we also use an economical elevator, which consumes energy only when it rises, ¡±Baryshev said.

Also, the environmental office is earthquake resistant and is ready to withstand even the strongest earthquake up to 12 points.

To conclude, during the construction of the building, almost all environmental technologies that exist in the world today were used.
To my way of thinking, it would be great to have more eco-buildings, such as "green office" in Almaty, all over the Kazakhstan and in other parts of the globe as well.

    Hi Ilsiya,

    This is your mentor Debbie.

I??ve never heard of the phrase ¡°eco-office¡±! Did you coin it yourself? :D

Anyways, increasing the use of alternative energy sources is a big goal for our society. We can no longer depend on the fossil fuels! :/ But since energy use is large in offices where there are so many digital devices, if we change the energy sources of offices, I see how this can create a big impact on protecting the environment.

Thanks for the article. Keep up with the work, Ilsiya!

    Best,

    Debbie

    Hi Ilsiya,

You have shared an 'Eco-office' as an example of Green Architecture. I wonder exactly what kind of 'office' it might be. It is wonderful that the six-story building is fully powered by alternative energy sources such as sunlight.

I was also intrigued by multifunctional glass treated with a thin layer of silver. Is it even cost efficient? I thought it might be too expensive to become a regular typical solution for energy saving windows.

Anyways, thanks for sharing:) Keep up the good work!
