Thematic Report : Soil pollution

by Adetomiwa Sijuade | 27-04-2022 07:48 recommendations 0

Soil pollution is referred to as the presence of toxic chemicals (pollutants or contaminants) in soil, in high enough concentrations to pose a risk to human health and/or the ecosystem. In the case of contaminants which occur naturally in soil, even when their levels are not high enough to pose a risk, soil pollution is still said to occur if the levels of the contaminants in soil exceed the levels that should naturally be present.

Causes of soil pollution

Soil pollution can be natural or due to human activity. However, it mostly boils down to the activities of the human that causes the majority of soil pollution such as heavy industries, or pesticides in agriculture

All soils, whether polluted or unpolluted, contain a variety of compounds (contaminants) which are naturally present. Such contaminants include metals, inorganic ions and salts (e.g. phosphates, carbonates, sulfates, nitrates), and many organic compounds (such as lipids, proteins, DNA, fatty acids, hydrocarbons, PAHs, alcohols, etc.). These compounds are mainly formed through soil microbial activity and decomposition of organisms (e.g., plants and animals). Additionally, various compounds get into the soil from the atmosphere, for instance with precipitation water, as well as by wind activity or other types of soil disturbances, and from surface water bodies and shallow groundwater flowing through the soil. When the amounts of soil contaminants exceed natural levels, pollution is generated.

Hello Adetomiwa, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Well written article about soil pollution! There is a ¡°level¡± of contaminants above which soils face many difficulties with maintaining their sustenance. Soils can deal with some amounts of contaminants in some degree thanks to their ability of self-purification with the help of microorganisms. However, we cannot only rely on this ability, as the ¡°level¡± at which soils can deal with contaminants by themselves is not that high. If we continue to make the soil healthier, we can boost their self-purification ability.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Adetomiwa, this is your mentor Joon.

There are different causes of soil pollution including the emissions from industrial factories, agriculture, ranching could affect the environment negatively. As mostly mentioned in your article, there are natural and artificial causes of pollution. Yet, we have to keep in mind that even though the pollution cycle seem natural, we should see them as artificial as human activities increased the average level of compounds on our atmosphere which leads to acceleration of soil pollution.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
