Writer: İntigam Huseynov Introduction Ethiopia is currently experiencing a civil war that has had a significant impact on civilians in the country. The conflict has escalated in recent years, with tensions between the ruling party and opposition groups erupting into full-blown armed clashes in several parts of the country. The situation has become particularly dire in Tigray, the northernmost region of Ethiopia, where a conflict between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has resulted in widespread violence, displacement, and a humanitarian crisis. This report will outline the impact of the civil war on civilians in Ethiopia in 2022. Displacement One of the most significant impacts of the civil war in Ethiopia has been mass displacement of civilians. According to the United Nations, more than 2 million people have been displaced as a result of the conflict in Tigray and neighboring regions. Many of these individuals have fled their homes due to violence and insecurity, seeking safety in other areas of the country, or crossing the border into Sudan and other neighboring countries. This mass displacement has created a humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by the fact that many of these individuals have lost their homes, possessions, and livelihoods. The displacement crisis has also been complicated by the fact that many of the displaced people are ethnic Tigrayans, and they face significant challenges in other parts of the country due to discrimination and hostility from members of other ethnic groups. This has led to overcrowding in camps for displaced people, inadequate access to basic services, and limited livelihood opportunities for those that have been forced to flee their homes. Humanitarian Crisis The civil war in Ethiopia has created a significant humanitarian crisis, particularly in the conflict zone of Tigray. The Ethiopian government and Tigrayan forces have been accused of committing atrocities against civilians, including acts of sexual violence, forced displacement, and extrajudicial killings. These actions have further contributed to the humanitarian crisis by making it difficult for civilians to access basic services and increasing the number of people in need of assistance. Violation of Human Rights The civil war in Ethiopia has also led to widespread violations of human rights. The Ethiopian government has been accused of committing human rights abuses, including arbitrary detentions, torture, and extrajudicial killings. The TPLF has also been accused of committing human rights abuses, including targeting civilians based on their ethnicity. The ethnic tensions have also made it difficult for humanitarian organizations to provide assistance, as access to certain areas is limited due to security concerns or hostility towards members of certain ethnic groups. Economic Impact The civil war in Ethiopia has had a significant impact on the country's economy. The conflict has damaged or destroyed businesses and infrastructure, particularly in the conflict zone of Tigray. This has had a ripple effect throughout the country, with businesses and markets disrupted, and people losing their jobs and sources of income. The economic impact of the conflict has further exacerbated the poverty and food insecurity already facing many Ethiopians. Conclusion The civil war in Ethiopia has had a devastating impact on civilians in the country. The conflict has led to mass displacement, a humanitarian crisis, violations of human rights, ethnic tensions, and a significant economic impact. While a ceasefire was announced in end of August 2022, the situation is still fragile, and sustainable peace is far from assured. The Ethiopian government and all parties to the conflict must take urgent measures to protect civilians, provide humanitarian assistance, and work towards a sustainable peace agreement to end the conflict and prevent further human suffering. The international community also has a role to play in supporting the efforts to end the conflict and provide assistance to those affected.
