Bothrops insularis is endemic from Brazil, specifically from Queimada Grande Island, nearby the shore of Itanhaém, a São Paulo (Brazilian state) county. Its occurrence is equal to the area of the island, 0,37 Km2, and the extension of its occupation is calculated in 0,25 km2, considering that the snake lives mainly in forest area.
The main threat to the species is the illegal catching of individuals, probably for be sold in the black market. Also, deforestation and burning of the forest is a menace for the quality of its habitat.
