Habitat : South America
Status : Endangered
This butterfly lives in restricted high altitudes areas. It is known to live in only three locations in Serra da Mantiqueira, Brazil, and one location in Serra Geral. The total area occupied by the Pampasatyrus gyrtone is of less than 500km2. Recently, urban sprawl and recreative activities such as ecotourism are a menace to remaining habitats. Farming and forestry are also threatening the survival of the species, along with the global warming. An increase of 2 or 3 °C would cause a great loss of habitat, pushing the butterfly to higher and more limited areas.
