[2018 HIDDEN ECO-HERO AWARDS] Give your‘Recommendation’ to vote for your nominee.

■ Name: Margo Tamzone Adonis (South Africa)

■ Nominated by Rosa Domingos

■ Achievement Summary

Margo entered Miss Earth South Africa earlier this year as the Miss Earth programme is a leadership platform whereby the candidate can advocate for environmental issues through environmental awareness and community outreach. During her campaign she focused on many different projects in aid of demonstrating her passion for the environment. Her projects varied from beach cleanups, community cleanups, river cleanups, environmental awareness at schools, and water conservation talks at schools but the one project that was, I believe, Margo's highlight was Arbour month 2018.

During the month of September 2018 Miss Margo went to different schools within the Western Cape and planted 100 trees, the aim of celebrating Arbour week was not only to promote the understanding and importance of Arbour Week, but to link world day of importance to school activations which included a school cleanup and a demonstration and talk on Single-use plastics and the alternatives.

Ms Margo ensured that her project had no limitations in terms of the schools she visited around the Western Cape and so, went to the following areas:
- George
- Saldanha Bay
- Diazville
- Hopland
- Khayelitsha
- Nanga
- Ottery
- Fisantekraal
- Melkbostrand

■ Influence

West Coast Regional Eskom Science Expo Judge and Guest of Honour:
This year, Margo was honoured with the privilege to be invited to the very competition I participated in 2007 and 2008 as a regional judge and Motivational speaker at the ceremony. To be given the opportunity to give back not only to the community where she grew up and to the educators that invested in her was a humbling and phenomenal experience for Ms Margo. This opportunity had given her the chance to influence the young learners within the region as she shared her story. The Eskom Science Expo is a competition held nationally every year and it aims to inspire young minds about the world of science and engineering. It also awards every participate of their invention/project because the competition believes in encouraging children and youth to dream big.

Ceremonial tree planting in aid of a commendation by the South African Defense Force: Army Support Base Western cape:
Margo was also invited by the SADF to attend a ceremonial tree planting 2018 in aid of them celebrating a commendation award presented to Margo for the devotion, loyalty and services rendered to our County by the projects she has been doing within the Western Cape, to not only empower the youth but to better our Country. This award has allowed Margo to influence the social networks, as it showed that different sectors and organizations as this acknowledges the work done by a civilian and supports the environmental initiatives taken to better our Country.

Invited by the United Nations Environmental Programme to attend the Launch of World Cleanup Day:
As a country we have begun to celebrate this world environmental day of importance through conducting different cleanup initiatives. By attending the event, Ms Margo Adonis influenced not only the water sector which she works in but also the environmental sector as well as take the lessons learnt from this event to her community and schools.

■ Future plan
Margo's future plans are to continue giving back by empowering the youth and communities within the Western Cape. She wishes to use different platforms and networks to continue her advocacy on Environmental Management and sustainable life styles and mindsets. The ultimate goal for is to one day work for the United Nations Environmental Programme and continue the work and advocacy on such a prestige platform as the UN, “I want to join forces with many other organizations and use my passion to advocate not only locally but internationally and present my County as a young leader,” said Margo.

She's a huge inspiration to many who want to push for environmental advocacy, child/youth education, and sustainable development! I am grateful to have met, interview and work with her as a colleague at work.

Her passion and zeal in the projects she has partaken in speak for themselves and I would like to honour her work in the line of looking after the Earth, one tree planting campaign, one school education gathering and one river clean-up project at a time!

    Take a bow Ms. Adonis!
