■ Name: Forbi Perise Eyong Nyosai (Cameroon)

■ Nominated by Ndapeh Ndellejong Blaise

■ Achievement Summary

As a young environmental science student in the university of Buea Cameroon, the access to the internet gave the nominee a wide scope for reading where he learned from multiple world class journals, the effect of plastic pollution in the environment just like the multiple consequences linked to this pollution, such as land degradation and destruction of aquatic life due to its accumulation respectively in land and water, thus posing a threat to biodiversity   He noticed plastics were common trash found in drainage systems and streams in his community . This pushed him to take personal commitment and to launch an operation ‘PICK UP PLASTIC’ Campaign. Before long, this was not only personal goal to the nominee, but this became a family gaol with his siblings joining him. His passion for the environment and cleaning up caused him to intensify his efforts by going workouts in the evenings in the City of Buea just to pick up litter along the streets, with a rate of at least 5kg of plastic litters picked from the streets every day. Since August 11, he will go as far as visiting a recycling company 30km away from his town in other to get them his support by transporting the plastics he had collected after sending them several emails as regards to his new found passion. His passion for the environment got him in contact with a Youth led environmental organisation which supported him. He began environmental clubs in secondary schools in his town where he had an ideal platform to share his passion with other young people. Perise took out time to educate students about environmental issues, after obtaining authorisation from the principal of the schools. He was able to reach out to 5 schools and he walked from class to class to speak to students about the EARTH SAVERS CLUB which is the name given to clubs he created. in addition to creating awareness he began to post about the environment and his regular clean ups on his facebook account. He was courageous enough to ask question to officials that work in environmental office in his region on what they were doing to raise awareness on plastic pollution. During the World Environment day, Perise who campaign had now realised an increase toll in youth participation organised a plastic pick up event with his friends. He later started a project together with young people in his community dubbed “PICK UP PLASTIC FOR A BETTER WORLD’’ which he got authorisation from the government to run. The project was the first recycling contest ever held in his region.  The project encouraged young people to collect and pick up recyclables within the community and deposit at a collection site newly created as a result of the project, and it was also an opportunity to educate the local population on recycling. Perise was also able to convince the Divisional Delegate (official representing the Ministry of Environment in the local area) of Environment to help transport the over 7000 plastic bottles to the recycling company collected during the course of the project.

■ Influence

Perise has had to combine the roles of activist, educator and innovator to find ways to inspire students on a topic that they had known nothing about previously.
He has been incredibly successful at this, motivating students in an endless amount of creative ways. One example is that of the Earth Saver Clubs in different schools, where he promotes the creation of a group of students that dedicate themselves to bettering the environment near their community. He has had great results in these clubs so far.
Together with his siblings Perise started jogging and picking up plastic with his friends. Also, he organised a clean-up campaign around student hostels in his town during the world environment day where he and his friends picked up more than 2000 plastic bottles and by the end of the month, he donated over 5000 plastic bottles he had picked up with friends and siblings to a recycling company. in addition to his  numerous clean up campaigns , the pickup plastic for a better world first ever  recycling contest in his region  initiated by him and friends got close to a hundred kids and adults participate with more than 7000 plastic bottles and 20kg of discarded plastics picked up , while the delegate in charge of the environment and nature protection in his region saluted his efforts given the results and impact it made. the delegate even offered to transport the over 7000 plastic bottles to the recycling company 30km from his town.

■ Future plan
Together with a group of passionate young people who he has recruited to his cause, Perise plans to fundamentally change the way that people across his country see their interactions with the environment. He hopes that he can show his neighbours how they can work towards their own goals while simultaneously working in harmony with the planet, he believes strongly in the ability of young people to create change within their various communities. In partnership with the government, private companies, local and international organisation he envisions a world where young people will be supported and given a chance to come and stand as environmental civic leaders. Also, he hopes to champion advocacy for the environment with youths been the main drivers

If there is one thing I have seen from this guy then that's dedication, hard work and the ability to create a positive impact irrespective of all the disadvantages. I was there when he inspired those children and youths to engage positive change. I was there when 7000 bottles and plus where eradication from the small village of koke... I am short of time to tell you all. Infact he is the best and most qualified for this award.
