Food waste in Kazakhstan

by Amina Kabdyrakym | 06-02-2021 19:11

According to statistics, approximately 58 percent of people live in urban areas and cities in Kazakhstan.  In summer, it is possible to have fresh fruits that were grown by local farmers. However, in harsh winters, all fruits come from other hot countries. Vegetables and fruits that came from other countries give a profit, but it also leads to food spoilage, which occurs over time. It is more efficient to search for ways to prevent food spoilage, such as improving a food storage system, such as dehydrating more vegetables and fruits. Thus, foods will not spoil with time, and the property of food will remain for a long time.
The second way of prevention of food spoilage is the cultivation of vegetables and fruits in nearby places. It will prevent food spoilage during transportation. The possible solution for it is vertical farming. Nowadays, the technology of vertical farming is improving, and raising in cities is more than achievable. Vertical farming achieved the growth of vegetables with much less water and without chemicals, which guarantee healthy and safe food.
If food spoilage happens, then it should be collected separately from other trash and transformed into biogas. Thus, food waste will be used more efficiently, and the recycling system will be more organized in Kazakhstan.
Another way of preventing food spoilage is by buying less food that is necessary for family or person. Therefore, fewer products will spoil, less food will be in the bin.
To conclude, as fruits and vegetables require a large amount of water to be grown, we should minimize food waste.
