The law of Kazakhstan on the formation of an environmentally oriented economy towards a "green economy" was adopted in 2013.

First, by the end of 2020, it is expected to bring the share of renewable energy to 3%, and by 2030 - 10%, the processing of solid household waste in the republic should be 13.2%.

Secondly, to annually inform the population about the current environmental situation in Kazakhstan, based on Article 166-1 of the Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a National Report on the State of the Environment and the Use of Natural Resources is drawn up in developing. The National Report reflects data on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the environment and natural resources, the ecological situation in the regions, anthropogenic impact on the environment, including on the main socially significant environmental problems, the implementation of state policy in the field of the environment. and the use of natural resources.

The current Environmental Code in Kazakhstan was created on January 9, 2007, and its latest version entered into force in December 2019. Unfortunately, 75 amendments made over 12 years did not create the necessary conditions for achieving the goals set in the field of environmental quality regulation and the establishment of an acceptable impact on it, ensuring environmental safety, preserving ecological systems, and biological diversity.

The new version of the Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan is being developed according to the instructions of the First President, voiced in the message to the people of Kazakhstan "New development opportunities in the context of the fourth industrial revolution" from January 10, 2018.

In 2018, the Concept of the new Environmental Code was approved.
