dioxin, a toxic substance

Recently Belgium pulled huge quantity of pork product from the market in addition to butchering and burying massive number of pig carcasses. Neighboring nations banned an import of Belgian pork product, damaging its economy. It was a big social issue in Belgium. Why did this happen? It was because of dioxin. Then what is dioxin?
dioxin=the most polsonous mon-mode chemlcat compound
Dioxin is very poisonous. It also lasts for a long time, even tens of years, in the environment and is not easily biodegradable. This fat-soluble chemical compound gradually builds up and combines with fatty tissues of an animal and is not easily eliminated from the system. Due to these characteristics, human and carnivores, at the top of food chain, have several million times the concentration of dioxin compared to that in the atmosphere.

1. dioxin - environmental hormone - cancer

Accumulated in human body, dioxin help inducing cancer.
dioxin, a toxic substance_01
Since it is chemically stable and non-biodegradable, the dioxin remaining in soil or air is introduced to animal or plant system. When human eats this animal or plant, dioxin builds up in the system. It can be fatal even in miniscule dosage and can lead to lung, liver or lymphatic cancer.
dioxin is a powerful endocrine disruptor
Dioxin is a form of environmental hormone that disrupts the function of natural hormone in our body, causing infertility, deformity and stunted growth and making the system more susceptible to epidemic attack.
This chemical is everywhere and anyone has high concentration of dioxin in his/her system.

Dioxin, its amount in natural state, is so insignificant that it is not so harmful to our system. Most of dioxin found in our surrounding is man-made.
3.dioxin and defoliant
Concentration of dioxin, generated from above sources, is just one-billionth gram per a cubic kilometer but you have to remember even this infinitesimal amount can be lethal. Even several grams of dioxin contaminates entire region and results in birth of deformed baby, premature birth or death of people living in the affected area.

  • PETER KANGARA says :
Dioxin is major factor that should be focused on. Most cities for example Nairobi which is in Kenya have a lot of dump sites whereby there is a lot of incineration going on, so it means that most of the people are exposed to danger. This is an issue that governments should try to find solutions through the academic experts and anyone else who can contribute in making a solution.
