[Ambassador report] [Thematic Report] [Environmental Issues in Films and Books]

While considering the thematic report of this month, I have been recalling a lot of movies I have previously watched. In this report, I want to talk about a really famous movie that I'm sure almost everyone has watched before. The title is Finding Nemo! Although it may simply be a movie that induces certain emotions throughout, I believe there were various themes, with the overarching theme of overfishing.

During the movie, there is a scene in which a large net is thrown underwater by fishers to catch a big number of fish (although this ends with the fish being strong enough to break free). Whilst watching this part of the movie, I'm sure many of us have been cheering for the fish to break free. Although this was simply a movie scene, it is a prevalent environmental issue that is being faced everyday. Overfishing can create an imbalance in the marine ecosystem, resulting in the loss of marine life.

Another scene in the movie presents a scene in the dentist, where a little girl is vigorously shaking a plastic bag with a fish inside it. The scene relates to certain aspects of animal abuse. Although some may argue that the little girl is unaware of the consequences as a result of her actions, animal abuse is another prevalent issue in society today. I believe it is essential to consider the ethics of our actions before performing them, especially to animals.

    Hello Jaewon

This is a really interesting report. I agree with the negative consequences of over-fishing, but I wonder if there's any standard separation between normal fishing over-fishing. If there is no specific standard for definition of over-fishing, I think there should be one so that some policies can be implemented throughout the world.
And about the issue of animal abusing, it is certainly inhumane and children from their young ages should be educated in proper way. They must learn how to live along them with respect.
I hope the situation of these two issues get better with the awareness of many people.

Thank you for the great report.

    Hey Jaewon
    it's Lisa once again.

Of course, I have heard of the movie and actually, it's one of my favorite movies of my childhood:) Though I have watched the movie several times, I have never thought about it in the environmental aspect but reading your report I think indeed an environmental message could be inferred from the story! If it hadn't been for humans with selfish greed, nemo would have never been lost in the first place!

    Nice new approach:)
    Enjoyed reading your articel!

    Hey Jaewon,
Thank you so much for writing this report. Most of the times a lot of people just watch movies and forget about it without giving some thought of the hidden meanings or messages that the movie depicts.
It is necessary for people to spend some thought on these messages as mass media is nowadays available to almost everyone and can create a lot of good when people are made aware on the right issue

    Cheers to this awesome report!
