[Ambassador report] [Thematic Report] [Marine Environment]

When reading through online articles about the "extinction of ____ species", readers often jump to conclusions, assuming that they no longer exist. However, I'll explain the concept of a functionally extinct species. In this case, the organism is simply not performing their role in the natural ecosystem.

Recently, a study was conducted, wherein the magnitude of shark populations were investigated in reef habitats. It was found that sharks were rarely seen in 20 percent of the locations studied. The slow depreciation of the shark population is alarming, as this may disrupt the ecosystem in equilibrium.

Sharks are normally considered the apex predator of the marine ecosystem, and thus regulate the population of latter species in the ecosystem. If sharks existed in lesser quantities, other predators would rise in number, and preys would ultimately face a problem of over-consumption.

Though many other marine problems are present around the globe, identifying the overarching consequences of small changes can allow us to measure the severity of issues.

Hi Jaewon, this is a mentor, Sang Su Lee.

It was interesting to know the precise definition of extinction, which is the state that animals do not function in the ecosystem anymore. It's so sad that sharks are slowly approaching to the state of extinction. If you've researched about the reason why sharks are diminishing, the article would have been better!

Thank you for writing a good article!

Hello Jaewon Chang, this is mentor Taehyun!

Thank you for the article about sharks! Sharks play a big part in the marine ecosystem, but unlike other top predators in other marine ecosystems, such as whales and polar bears, they don't seem to be doing well in small units. It seems that we need to improve people's awareness by promoting the importance of that area.

    Thank you for the report!

    Green cheers!

  • Emerson Utgaard says :
Thank you for this informative report on shark numbers! Preserving keystone species like sharks is very important. Your article reminds me of an environmental issue in the United States: the decline of gray wolves. Like sharks, wolves are apex predators, and when their numbers declined, herbivore populations rose precipitously, leading to overgrazing of native vegetation. Keep up the good work :).

    Hello Jaewon,
Thank You very much for your report on marine environment.
You have introduced interesting topic about population decline of shark. For balanced ecosystem, every component should be in proper position. Yes, our small action makes a great impact.
    Green cheers~
