Acid rain was known as early as the 18th century, when Smith, a British chemist, analyzed the chemical composition of the rainfall in Manchester, one of the big industrial cities, and pointed out that there were mainly three harmful ingredients, that is, sulfuric acid and acid sulfate were found in the air of the city, ammonia sulfate was found in the suburbs, and ammonia carbonic acid was found in the countryside far away from the city, in which sulfuric acid would discolor the fabric and corrode metals. At present, our definition of acid rain is acid precipitation. Rain Water's pH (pH) is usually less than 5.7 (the normal pH of Rain Water is 5.7). Acid rain is the product of combining moisture in the atmosphere with sulfur monoxide and nitric oxide emitted by power plants, factories, and cars. Acid rain with a PH value of less than 4.7 will convert an organic lead in the soil into the inorganic lead, which inhibits the cell division of tree roots, so that the spores of various bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other pathogens invade the roots and kill trees; if the PH value is less than 3.5, it will also directly damage the leaves of plants, causing them to turn yellow and die. Therefore, people often call this kind of acid rain "the god of death in the sky". 


The harm of acid rain is mainly manifested in: first, the harm to the aquatic system, it will lose fish and other biological communities, change the cycle of nutrients and poisons, make toxic metals dissolve into the water and enter the food chain, resulting in the reduction of species and productivity. This harm has been discovered as early as the last century. In early 1970, the fish decline was found in the Athabasca River system far south of the world's largest sulfur smelter in Rocherivo, Canada. in the United States, a vast area of precipitation composition analysis was organized by the United Nations Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute and the Public Health Bureau in 1950-1960, warning of the extinction of fish in lakes in the national park. 


Second, the harm to the terrestrial ecosystem is mainly manifested in soil and plants. The effects on soil include inhibition of organic matter decomposition and nitrogen fixation, leaching of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and other nutrient elements, impoverishment of the soil. For plants, acid rain damages new leaf buds that affect their growth and development and lead to the degradation of the forest ecosystem. In recent years, the area of forest damage in several cities in Central Europe has expanded, characterized by yellowing, early damage of needles, deformation of young and roots, blight, and even death. On June 28, 1973, a total of 441 people in several cities, rural areas along the coast of Suruga Bay and Uenohara, Yamanashi Prefecture, complained to the authorities that the naked eye and throat were irritated in the rain and fog, and onions, tobacco, cucumbers, and eggplant were killed. Rain Water determined that the lowest value of PH was 3.5.


Third, the impact on the human body. First, heavy metals such as mercury and lead enter the human body through the food chain, causing cancer and Alzheimer's disease; second, acid fog invades the lungs, causing pulmonary edema or death. Third, living in an environment containing acid deposits for a long time induces the production of excessively oxidized lipids, resulting in an increase in the probability of arteriosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and other diseases. 


Fourth, the corrosion of buildings, machinery, and municipal facilities. It is reported that the corrosion of buildings and materials caused by acid rain in the United States alone amounts to 2 billion US dollars a year.

    Thank you for your elaborate explanation on what is acid rain and how it can affect not only humans but also the entire ecosystem. Acid rain can make one bald, and corrode the buildings as you've mentioned. It also acidifies the ocean, thereby preventing calcification of many species that have shells.
