Author: Rachel Carson

Editorial House: Houghton Mifflin

The book 'Silent Spring' is a inside look of the detrimental effects of pesticides on the environment, particularly on the birds. The book strongly creates a picture of the world tragedy due to indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides. It suggests that if the harmful chemical pesticides are kept in use, even human species will have to suffer a great deal. Rachel Carson with her poetic flourishes evokes a spring season where no birds sing due to their extinction and this is how the title "Silent Spring" was given. The book enforced the ban of DDT (chemical pesticide) and created revolutionary changes in the law of environment. It will be no exaggeration to say that this book is a cornerstone of judicious use of chemicals for sustainable future. As, I am an agricultural student and environment activist, I understand the implication of "Silent Spring" in joining agriculture with environment and environment with all of us. When I first read this book, I was moved by the way emotions of nature are portrayed. The topics like Rivers of death and Nature fights back personally helped me to love my works on environment even more. And with this book I find the reason why a pause and glance to environment is necessary now and then. As I have been benefited, raged, and aroused to environment by the book, "Silent Spring", I call upon all the environment lovers to read it once. I am sure you will feel the same.

Silent Spring is widely thought to have sparked the environmental movement in the USA! Very influential book, and, I agree, I'd recommend all environmentalists take a look at it. Thanks for sharing :)
