[Africa bulletin] Madagascar (the movie :) FOSSA

These cat-like creatures were made famous by the animated movie Madagascar. Hailing from the REAL island of Madagascar, these carnivorous animals descended from mongooses are now considered endangered, even though they are the top carnivores on the island. Their forest habitats are slowly being destroyed by humans, leading to a significant drop in Fossa numbers. Right now there are only around 2500 individuals left in the wild.

Fossa have retractable claws and fearsome cat-like teeth. Their fur is reddish-brown in colour and they have a muzzle like a dog's. Their long tail enables them to hunt and move swiftly, making Fossa harder for scientists to study.

These incredibly agile animals are solitary, nocturnal mammals who hunt both in trees and on the ground. As was mentioned in Madagascar, they diet mainly on lemurs, but also feed on frogs, reptiles and birds.
