Blue Oceans, Worth 920 billion dollars in value. If the world's marine protected areas are expanded by 30% of the total surface area of the Earth, 920 billion dolaars of benefits can be earned by 2050. How large of an amount is 920 billion dollars? This is the amount that Sweden uses for the management of state for appx. 3 years. Marine protected areas are areas that are designated and managed for the protection of marine ecosystems, ecological processes, habitats and species. Marine tourism occupies the largest portion of Europe's maine economy! An average of appx. 110,000 people every year visit each of the marine protected asreas in Southern Europe. Indonesia designated mangrove forests as marine protected areas from 2000 until 2010. They protected 14,000 hectares of mangrove forests and reduced 13 million tons of carbon emissions. 4 years after the city of Moma in Mozambique designated protected areas and prohibited fishing, they reaped the benefits of more abundant marine resources. However, the total area of marine protected areas is only 3.4% of the total surface area of the Earth. The 10th Convention on Biological Diversity decided in 2010 to increase marine protected area to 10% of the total surface area of the Earth by 2020.
