Can UN keep their promise in 2015

– 'UN Millennium Development Goals'

Jooheon, Kim

In September, 2000, the world leaders and delegates gathered at the United Nations in New York. It was to have an important meeting prior to the new millennium that human race was about to face. The name of the meeting was 'millennium Summit.' The world leaders set year 2015 as a reference point to solve issues including famine, poverty, disease, equality between genders, and environmental conservation, and set grand goals. Eight specific goals that they made are called the UN Millennium Development Goals. Eight specific goals that they made were a blueprint of a better world. Eight specific goals are  the followings.

<UN Millennium Development Goals>

Goal 1: To eradicate desperately poor and famine : Let's help those in need.

Goal 2: To provide universal primary education : Let's provide education to the children who are still being denied a proper education.

Goal 3: Gender equality and to enhance woman's ability : sexual equality and to help women's advancement in society.

Goal 4: To decrease the death rate of small children(infants): Let's decrease the number of deaths at young age.

Goal 5: To enhance health of new mothers : Let's guide pregnant women to stay healthy

Goal 6: To exterminate HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases : Let's help those who are at risk of disease.

Goal 7: To guarantee sustainable environment : Let's protect our environment for sustainable Earth in the future.

Goal 8: Build international partnership for developments : Let's cooperate internationally to help developing countries and underdeveloped countries.

Reference: 2011 Millennium Development Goals in Korean(UN MDGs Report by Korean National Commission for UNESCO)

Since eight goals listed above were set in 2000, international society has been putting in a lot of effort. As a result, millions of people have emerged from poverty, children who couldn't attend school were able to receive education, the death rate of mother and newborn decreased, many countermeasures on HIV and other diseases were prevented, and drinking water was purified. However, the reality is poor children do not have sufficient amount of proper nutrition and there aren't that many opportunities for women to work. Hygienic conditions in rural and areas where poor populations live  is still very poor and it is still difficult to find water that's safe to drink in sub-Sahara, South Africa, and other specific areas.

This is why more active cooperation is need from the international society in order to achieve the new millennium goals. We need to pay closer attention on the claim that the reason why the international society cannot achieve goals is not because they don't have ability but because they don't? have strong political will. For instance, we can help countless poor people just by saving costs that the international society uses to maintain military power. The cost to solve poverty problem throughout the world is estimated to be 1.9 billion U.S dollars, but the cost that countries in the world are paying to maintain military power is said to be over 800 billion U.S dollars. If they just cut down on military buildup costs a little bit, they can take care of food distribution to the children in the world. It is necessary to change people?s consciousness.

However, many positive changes are found around the world. Good examples are the enterprises which are doing business in developing countries or underdeveloped countries. For example, AtoZ in Tanzania is making contributions in disease prevention (goal #6) by supplying sterilized mosquito nets with strong durability, and Pesinet in Mali fulfilling changes in the community by introducing early-warning devices to check health conditions of children under the age of five (Goal 4). Also, THTF in China is expanding chances to receive education by selling computers in rural areas (Goal 2).  In addition to this, wide range of corporate activities in the poorest market is contributing to accomplish the new millennium goals. International society is increasingly concerned with biological diversity and protecting the ecosystem of the Earth (Goal 7).

In UN Conference on Sustainable Development - Rio+20 that is scheduled to be held in Rio, Brazil in 2012, there will be many debates to achieve goals listed above, and it will be a great opportunity to prepare specific plans to achieve the new millennium goals.

It's been over 10 years since world leaders got together and set-up the new millennium goals. Much of a dream of freeing humankind from poverty, famine, war, and disease has been accomplished, but there is still much left to be done.  I may not be able to achieve specific goals during the 4 years of remaining term. But the most important thing is to put utmost effort until the end to accomplish goals and to have sincere attitude of striving for a better world.  For reference, an organization called 2015 Young Leaders for MDGs where young men are playing the key roles was established in Korea not too long ago and they are putting a lot of effort to achieve the new millennium goals. We should keep these eight goals in mind and need to be aggressive when there is something that we could do to achieve the new millennium goals.

"Our promise must be kept by 2015. If that promise is not fulfilled, millions of people will suffer great pains by death ž disease ž despair ž unnecessary hardship ž loss of opportunities"

-          UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon

Plant a tree and save the Earth Under Green India Project

Trees are a national asset, “a nations health can be gauged by the area under Tree cover” & cutting them indiscriminately is a great wrong to humanity, whether it is noise pollution, lung diseases, global warming/climate change, droughts etc. it??s all has something to do with lack of greenery in our surroundings.

The way Trees are being cut the day is not far away when people will be dying for want of fresh air & new generations will be carrying oxygen masks to sustain the life & perhaps venturing out in open will be a luxury.

Trees are integral part of our lives they provide us with oxygen, fruits, shade, shelter, scenery, medicine, construction material, energy. They are associated with all five elements of life earth, sky, air, fire, and water. They also remove co2 from air which has spiked in recent decades and has been linked to global warming.

"Save Trees" is not just a slogan to speak or to listen, it is, a persona, which should be followed by all, so as to save ourselves and our upcoming generation. Hence, SEDAMANIPUR is being founded to create a good ambiance and it is also a great opportunity for people, who have always wanted to be "a part of a healthy environment."

Trees represent life on this vast earth. They should be protected at any cost in this era of urbanization & industrialization and global warming.

In Today??s Modern World when everybody is after one another, only these Trees are there who live for the benefit of others. There is not a single part of tree which is not useful, with their beautiful foliage, fragrant flowers, cool shade, roots, bark, wood, sprouts and fruits they serve. Nobody returns without benefiting who approaches the tree.

The importance of Trees in purifying the air, as natural resources, maintaining the ecological balance, preventing soil erosion, as medicines, habitats for faunal species, providing nutrients to the soil etc. is well known Clearly, Trees are an important asset, and as with any asset, it is advantageous to ensure that it continues to appreciate.
