How To Prevent Your Pool From Wasting Water

1. Limit Drainage

To save water, you should limit how often you refill the pool. You may think that you have to drain your pool each season. Yet that is not the case. As long as you maintain adequate circulation time and chemical levels, your pool only has to be drained every three to seven years.

2. Reduce Pool Pump Usage

Even if the pool water appears cloudy, you can fix this problem without draining out all of the water. That is the purpose of your pool pump. However, running the pool pump longer than necessary can waste water.

Start out by using it eight hours each day. If the pool is constantly clear, you can turn the pump on less often. Check the water clarity regularly, as you may need to run the pump longer during certain months of the year. The wrong pump can also increase the operating cost of your pool. Make sure the pump and its motor are exactly what you need.

3. Keep the Water Cool

You should also keep the water temperature as cool as possible. This limits the amount of water that evaporates out of the pool. That¡¯s because warmer air evaporates more quickly than cooler air does.

4. Get a Pool Cover

If you can't stand a cold pool, consider investing in a pool cover instead. This is another easy way to prevent the water from evaporating. In fact, it can reduce evaporation by 30 to 50 percent. There are other benefits to pool covers, as well. They can also limit the growth of algae in the pool. A covered pool also requires fewer chemicals.

5. Reduce Wind

Wind can also increase the amount of evaporation in your pool. After searching inground swimming pools Maryland on the internet search for other locations prone to wind. Consider adding fences, screens or plants to block the gusts.

6. Check for Leaks and Fix Them Immediately

Even a small crack or leak in the pool can use up a lot of water. In fact, leaks can waste more than 100,000 gallons of water annually in a single pool. Any leak should thus be addressed right away. If you find yourself having to constantly refill your pool, you may have a leak.

Of course, small leaks are often hard to find. However, there are some visible signs of potential problems. Any gaps in the bond beam, loose coping stones or loose tiles on the pool deck could mean a leak is present. Algae growth can be an indicator, as well. Damp spots or water-saturated soil near the pool may also be a red flag.

In addition, you should look at your water bill regularly. A sudden increase may be evidence that the pool is leaking.

7. Turn Off Fancy Features

Waterfalls and fountains may look cool, but they also use up a lot of water and can encourage evaporation. If possible, turn them off unless you have company over.

8. Avoid Overfilling the Pool

Ideally, the water level of your pool should be halfway up the opening of the skimmer. This water level ensures that the skimmer works properly without wasting water. It will also prevent excess water from leaving the pool when your kids are splashing around.

9. Reuse Backwash Water

Backwashing the pool filter uses between 250 and 1,000 gallons of water, so only do this when necessary. By properly maintaining the filter, you can limit the need for backwashing.

You should also empty any backwash water onto your shrubs or lawn so the water doesn¡¯t go to waste. This will prevent the excess water from flowing into your neighbor's yard. Avoid dumping the backwash water into street drains, as this is against the law in some states.

By following the above steps, you can save money and water even if you have a swimming pool. Both the environment and your wallet will appreciate these efforts.
