Dear Beloved Ambassadors, Members, and Visitors: As many of you may already be aware, thousands of fires have been ravaging in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil since last month. Data by National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) suggests that the number of fires in Brazil, which holds more than half of the Amazon rainforest, has shown 76% increase compared to the same period in 2018. And since 2010, this year has been recorded as the highest number of fires in Brazil. It is important for us to understand the current situation in Amazon because it is home to 10% of the world¡¯s global biodiversity and it also produces 20% of the world¡¯s oxygen, which is how it got its name, ¡®lungs of the world.¡¯ Our monthly event for September will be about understanding the current situation: what are the causes, why is this significant, what are some possible negative aftermath resulting from this situation, and what can be the solutions?
