When Rain Meets Pollution: Delhi¡¯s Temporary Relief

by Akshat Jain | 03-09-2025 18:12

As a first-year college student in Delhi, I often check the AQI because it directly affects daily life. Most of the time, the numbers are discouraging, with the city covered in a grey haze. Breathing clean air feels like a rare experience. But recently, after a spell of heavy rain, I noticed something different. The sky looked clearer, the air felt fresher, and the AQI apps showed a big drop in pollution levels. It made me curious, so I read about why this happens. Scientists call it ¡°wet deposition,¡± where raindrops pull down dust and pollutants from the atmosphere. This natural clean-up shows how quickly conditions can change. Before the rain, AQI levels were in the ¡°very poor¡± range, and within hours after, they moved closer to ¡°moderate.¡± The difference was visible to everyone on the streets. You sent It made me wonder: if rain can do this in just one day, what would happen if we consistently controlled emissions and dust ourselves? Maybe clean skies wouldn¡¯t feel like a once-in-a-while gift. As students, I think it¡¯s important we observe these changes and spread awareness. Delhi deserves air that is safe every day, not only after a storm.
