The industrialisation of the agricultural sector has significantly increased the chemical burden on natural ecosystems. The usage of pesticides have now become much more common in various agricultural fields.

Pesticides are toxic substances released intentionally into our environment to kill living things. This includes substances that kill weeds, insects, fungus, rodents and others. They are used in order to protect plants and humans from various diseases.

The use of toxic pesticides to manage pest problems has become a common practice around the world. Pesticides are used almost everywhere not only in agricultural fields, but also in homes, parks, schools, buildings, forests, and roads. It is difficult to find somewhere where pesticides aren't used from the can of bug spray under the kitchen sink to the airplane crop dusting acres of farmland, our world is filled with pesticides. In general, pesticides are found in the air we breathe, food we eat and even the water we drink, it is present all around us.

However the use of pesticides are now going erroneous in some countries around the world. Small-scale vegetable growers in Burkina Faso are unfamiliar with the proper use of pesticides and end up exposing both people and the environment to serious contamination risks.

The quantity of pesticide applied to a given surface area is higher than the recommended level in 72% of cases, while the recommended spray concentration is exceeded 56% of the time. As a result, the water in around 30% of the wells in agricultural areas is unsuitable for drinking, and the pesticide level in 36% of vegetables does not meet international regulatory standards. All of these threats put a huge risk on people living in the areas exposed to pesticides as it poses a harm of carcinogens that are very harmful to human life.

Past studies revealed that 70–80% of farmers experienced health problems while and just after applying pesticides in Burkina Faso. 

With such unhealthy practices of applying pesticides, human life can be significantly affected and what is now happening in one country can or possibly will happen in various other countries around the world.
