Organic Farms In Abu Dhabi

by Asmita Pramanik | 10-02-2018 00:33

UAE is a country where there is something different to watch out for every day. I was reading the newspaper yesterday and there was one particular article that caught my eye- "100 farms to go organic in Abu Dhabi". It mentioned that 25 farms are to be converted this year alone.

What is organic farming?

Organic farming is an agricultural system that seeks to provide the consumer, with fresh and authentic food while respecting natural life-cycle systems.

Once the crops are cultivated, the soil loses its nutrients and its quality depletes. Organic farming initiates the use of natural ways to increase the health of soil. It focuses on the use of bacteria that is present in animal waste which helps in making the soil nutrients more productive to enhance the soil. Genetic modification is kept away from this kind of agricultural set up because organic farming focuses on the use of natural ways and discourages engineered animals and plants.  Organic farming also includes choosing plant and animal species that are resistant to disease and adapted to local conditions.

As part of its responsibility to support sustainable agriculture, preserve natural resources and provide markets with healthy, safe and high quality products, Abu Dhabi Farmers Service Centre, ADFSC, has signed agreements with 25 farms in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, UAE to convert them from traditional to organic agriculture. The centre seeks to convert about 100 farms for organic agriculture over the next four years.

This has been in agreement with all those farmers who wish to adopt organic farming, with use of organic pesticides and biological control systems to reduce the use of chemicals in agriculture, whether fertilizers or pesticides.

The organic farm initiative is part of sustainable agricultural practices that help preserve natural resources and provide markets with healthy, safe and high quality products. Along with this, initiatives by ADFSC to educate more and more local farmers about organic farming and its benefits has also been taken up.

Because of the government's tireless efforts, UAE is certainly on its way up to become one of the most sustainable countries in the world.
