[May Theme report] How has the elements of cities changed?

As the scale and ratio of cities in a country are increasing, it is obvious that the places for generating energy are decreasing. Moreover, the requirement and demand for energy such as electricity, became extended along with the development of new technologies. The Korean government and local authorities are now introducing a diverse methods to generate available energy in urban areas. 
These kinds of efforts have been tried since a few years ago, however, this time, more creative and productive technologies are urgently needed.

In South Korea, now you can observe many electric buses rather than the original ones driven by fossil fuels. These electric buses have been rapidly supplied and finally settled into the promising business from the car companies such as Hyundai. One of the desirable points of electric buses is that the buses explicitly show their purpose for these electric buses. For example, a type of electric bus which is the most seen in the street has inscribed a message of  ¡°Zero fine dust&pollution electric bus¡±. This exposure would be very advantageous to remind the public and give them the insight to see the environmental problem in real life. Electric buses are also able to alleviate noise pollution through their low noise. 

There are various cities that are contributing to the revival of the environment in South Korea. Pohang-si, located in the south of the Korean peninsula, is an exemplary city for eco-friendly cities. Pohang-si is concentrating on hydroelectric industries to lead the economic system of hydroelectric energy. The local government of Pohang-si is fostering the hydrogen city by investing about 30 million dollars. This project is to construct the infrastructure of hydrogen generation and transportation facilities in the city utilizing hydrogen energy sources for multiple uses of hydrogen energy.

SMR, Small Modular Reactor is the rising technology for energy generation in urban areas. This reactor is a new type of nuclear power plant downsized from the conventional type. This feature leads to fuel requirements decreased. SMRs require less frequent refueling, which is every 3-7 years whereas the conventional plants require it every 1-2 years.  Furthermore, due to their small size, they are produced prefabricated so that can be located anywhere even in the center of the city with low costs. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is accelerating its development and scrutinizing its safeness in case of explosion or radiation. This institution is further considering introducing i-SMR, an innovative SMR, which has multiple advantages compared to the conventional one.
