![]() ![]() As Sri Lankans, we mainly consume electricity through fossil fuel burning. As we all know, it will create large number of greenhouse gases which result in global warming. The second source for electricity generation is coal in Sri Lanka. It is also emit number of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere while burning coal. Likewise, everyday world pollute air by generating greenhouse gases for energy consumption. This increased carbon dioxide increases the warmth of our planet. Climate change, population growth, and fossil fuel depletion mean that renewables will need to play a bigger role in the future than they do today. To address global warming issue, non-renewable energy must be replaced with alternatives that have comparable or better performance which are not emitting carbon dioxide. This can be identified as alternate energy or renewable energy. Renewable energy sources can be identified as solar, hydro, geothermal, biomass, wind and tidal power. They all have lower carbon emissions, compared to conventional energy sources. Currently, Sri Lanka has moving to energy sources like wind power, solar power, biomass power and hydro power rapidly. It will be a good sign for the path of achieving sustainability. It is important to influence the private sector to consume more renewable energy n their businesses. Since, businesses consume more non-renewable energy on their production. Government should take actions to promote renewable energy sources like solar, hydro, wind and biomass energy through tax reductions, incentives and other benefits. |
