Waste in Sri Lanka

by | 11-12-2017 01:53

Waste is one of the major problems in Sri Lanka today. With the change of people's consumption patterns waste becomes a tragedy to the country. In the past, people spent a simple life with low needs and wants. They have satisfied their needs and wants by themselves like foods, clothes and etc. They grew vegetables and fruits in their home gardens. After consuming those, they used them as fertilizers to the garden as compost. Therefore, there were not waste in that period. But with the economic changes people got different artificial goods and services. With that, people?s needs and wants also changed. They bought lot of things that not essential to them. Lives become more complex. In current situation, people are very busy with their works. They buy everything that they need from shops. In the urban life, they live in a small house which don?t have enough space. Most of goods made of non biodegradable things like polythene, plastic and etc. Therefore, after the end of each day, huge amount of waste is collected in the home.
Urban councils are collecting waste from houses everyday. In a day, large amount of waste collected from houses. Still there is not have a long term solution to that collected waste. It only use for land fillings. With this problem, in urban areas there can be seen large garbage mountains that cause to huge environmental and health hazards. People who are living around these garbage mountains face lot of health issues. The worst thing is 30 people had to lost their lives in last year with a landslide in that garbage mountain. Although it happens, government institutions are still silent.
I believe waste is money. First thing is people have to change their consumption patterns to reduce expenditure on products that cause to waste like polythene bags. Next, Government should establish a proper system to collect garbage from houses. Then, the main thing is there should be a business model to convert waste into money while eleminating garbage mountains. Then it will become a income method for the country.
