(MAY FREE REPORT) Poor Solid Waste Management in Bamenda

by Sandrine Yaah | 28-05-2023 13:22

The number of contaminated sites across bamenda, the North West regional capital of Cameroon keep increasing as a result of poor waste management. This increases in contamination site ( sites which contains in or under the land substances which are potentially hazardous to humans and the environment)  has an increasing human population growth and an increase in anthropogenic activities as some of it main reasons. Most of these wastes are being dumped along roadsides and into streams, with the major components  been food wastes, papers, plastics, rags, metal, glass, etc. The pollution caused by these pollutants is not limited to the soil only but extend to water and air.
Soil pollution affects above- and below-ground biodiversity, causing a reduction in less resistance organisms. In addition, soil contaminants can enter the food chain and cause disease and mortality in soil-dwelling, terrestrial (including humans) and Aquatic organism. With the soil being an indispensable tool for man¡¯s survival, the population turns to the same soil for crop production in a quest to sustain this increasing population.
The polluted soils in turn become a source of pollution for groundwater, through leaching of contaminants, and for fresh water and the marine environment, because contaminants can be transported off-site through  infiltration, wind and water erosion. These changes can be gradual or remain inert until an inflexion point. Atmospheric pollution is not left out as gases released from decomposing materials are been sent into the atmosphere. Flys, ador also accompany them.
With the fear of contamination/pollution by poor wastes dumping been a call for concern, Insecurity caused by the current Anglophone crisis is not making it easy for the waste management company. Leaving the citizens to sort out a disposing style that best suits them.
