Forest Cover in Dangerby Gadala Isaac | 10-11-2017 20:45 |

![]() In the last two years, the country has lost about 2% of its remaining forest cover dropping from 11% to 9% according to a joint Water and Environment Sector Review Report. The drop in the green cover has been consistent with a reported 24% of total area in 1990 and 9% in 2017. If the trend is to continue, this simply means that there will be no more forests ten years to come and therefore the government and it's citizens must do something to save the country. Some of the major causes of the deforestation include;- -Population increase which results in demand for more land for settlement and wood for construction (roofing and scaffolds); -Fuel: Wood fuel is widely used in many homes and institutions such as schools and prisons. Other alternatives such as gas and electricity exist though they are quite expensive so people opt for the cheaper option. There are however new cooking stoves on the market such as the ''biolite stove'' which are ecofriendly (release less smoke, can work with dry and decomposed domestic wastes) and can also convert the heat energy into electric energy which can be used to charge some small electric devices such as phones and electric torches. In his speech, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Water and Environment said that the government had prioritized the restoration of forests from the current total land area to 24% by 2040, this through planting about 200 million trees in all national forests and forest reserves in the country. Tax cuts on alternative sources of fuel should also be implemented to promote fuel diversity as a result reducing on over dependence on wood fuel. Other options such as the use of drone technology to disperse tree seeds and monitoring the existing plant cover against illegal deforestation can be used.
