My fourth report is focus on endangered species in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a one of biological hotspots in the world since it consist with higher biological diversity. Mother Nature has gifted large number of plants, animals and microbes species to the world. As humans have rights to live all those species have the right of living in this world. But unfortunately, behavior of humans caused to deprive the life of certain species in Mother Nature. They are identified as endangered species. They are in the danger zone since they may have the possibility of being extinct.

Let?s run through a few of our endangered species here in Sri Lanka. The major and most threatened animal is Sri Lankan Asian elephants. Sri Lankan elephant is the largest and darkest from all Asian elephants. They have patches of depigmentation on its ears, face, trunk and belly. Human elephant conflict is a topical conflict in Sri Lanka, since several humans and elephants have to be destroyed everyday due to this conflict. The main reason is for the threat of their lives is with the rapid development activities; forests are cleared and build new buildings, homes and roads in these areas. With this injustice animals are become destitute by losing their habitats and ancient migratory routes. They are losing their families and the foods. With that they come to villages and search foods. After that it will be a conflict and animals and humans both have to die unfortunately.  

Blue whales also one of endangered species in Sri Lanka. Blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on the earth. It can weigh about 137000Kg and grow as long as 34 m. It means bigger than 25 elephants. The reason for the threat of their life is fishing industry. Unethical fishing is emerging with low pressure from government. Fishermen use dynamite and other explodes to kill fish in large area at once. It will be very harmful to the other species in the sea. As well as they use traps to catch fish. These kinds of behaviors threaten the life of blue whales mainly.

The purple faced leaf monkey is a species of old world monkey that is endemic to Sri Lanka. The animal is a long tailed arboreal species identified by a mostly brown appearance, dark face and a very shy nature. Rapid urbanization caused to decrease their population level since they have lost their habitats and food sources. As well as, hunters hunt these animals for meat. 

These are some of endangered animals in Sri Lanka. There are large number of endangered animals and plants that have been identified since the various environmental destructions in the country. As the members of Tunza Eco Generation, we could take this as an opportunity to educate ourselves on the importance of protecting our endangered species. It is our responsibility to aware the world on endangered species and promotes the actions that we should take for protecting these species.
