Major environmental issues in Ethiopiaby | 26-09-2017 05:06 |

For my first report I want to share about major environmental issues faced in my country Ethiopia. Many regions in Ethiopia are affected by deforestation and high degree of desertification. Greenhouse effect, warming (rising of atmospheric temperature), loss of biodiversity, air, water and soil pollution, soil degradation, reduction of surface water and fresh water problem, an increased number of crop failures, wind and ice damage to crops, erosion, industrial pollution, hazardous chemicals and pesticides etc...are the major environmental problems of Ethiopia. In the rural setting, massive deforestation and degradation takes place for farming land and to build houses to accommodate the increasing rural population. This has exposed the soil for wind and running erosions thus depleting the soil nutrients. Forest products demand like timber and lumber are also a major cause for deforestation in Ethiopia. About 30% of Ethiopia was covered with forest in the 19th century but nowadays this number has decreased up to 4%. These problems mentioned above need to be solved and as a solution I believe educating the society is the most prominent. In addition, protecting forest resources, United Nation and other international and regional organizations enact more binding laws for the protection of global/regional/ environment, researches on environmental protection and the like can be solutions.
