![]() ![]() It is often wondered by children whether humans are running an experiment to measure how much smoke and pollution the atmosphere can really handle. But actually, there are so many beautiful places around the world where people are effectively experimenting on how to reduce pollution. One such place that I had visited was Mawlynnong Village in Meghalaya, India. It has been given the title of The Cleanest Village in Asia since 2003 by Discovery India magazine. A small, calm and almost spotless village situated away from the daily hustle and bustle of the urban cities gave its visitors a glimpse of how beautifully knowledge and enterprise can be combined to achieve a pollution-free environment. One of the major reasons why it is so clean and green is merely because of the responsible nature of its residents. The immaculate streets and gardens clearly indicated how considerate the people were towards their environment. Each and every resident had taken a duty upon themselves to weed, sweep and clean their area every morning before going to work. Even the children had imbibed these qualities from a young age and hardly hesitated to pick up any odd piece of garbage and place it in the bins. They claimed that it wasn't just a habit, but a tradition. The village is also very well supplied with a sufficient water supply and good sanitation system implemented by the villagers themselves. Cleanliness was deeply ingrained into living a good life here it's what they believed in. One of the most astonishing sights were the hand-woven bins made up of bamboo. As I was walking through the village, I also spotted many children in the nearby field swinging on swings made of just plastic bags. Urbanized people often question the reliability of the educational resources in rural areas, but here, education does not limit itself to bookish knowledge but also gives the children opportunities to explore them and use it for the prosperity of their village. With better technology and infrastructural support, urban cities can certainly take Mawlynnong's concepts forward and create a sustainable environment. All we need is to spread awareness amongst people to reiterate the importance of their responsible actions towards Mother Nature.
