![]() Kenya?s National environmental authority has in three cases tried to ban the plastics in the country. There is this one more time that Kenya is making this so serious that if one is found selling them, it is a huge risk for up to four years, a fine of $40,000 or both. Effective 28th august 2017 ,plastics in Kenya became illegal to be used,, manufactured and imported into the country for either commercial or household packaging. The reason for the ban in Kenya was to avoid health and environmental problems resulting from the use of plastic bags. The people dealing in selling plastic bags were given a period at which they should clear the existing stock however much it has basically been a source of income. . In 2007, Kenya tried to discourage their use by limiting the thickness of plastic bags, ordering manufacturers and importers to only sell bags with more than 30 microns. Four years later, they tried again by banning plastic bags less than 60 microns, which were considered more recycle- friendly. There were technical challenges back hen since people cold not tell th difference in papers in terms of macrons contained in the plastic paper bags. This therefore made it hard for the authority to sustain this. Well I applaud the Kenyan Government because this is the first African country to put a ban on plastic. I wish every country can try to borrow this policy. The public have been sensitized about the benefits for the practice and so they are trying to work about it. I think when this is sustained we shall have a little or no plastics finding their way into seas. I well hope that this step taken by Kenya in environmental leadership can inspire other countries for the cause. It's a great example that I hope will inspire others, and help drive further commitments to
