Urban heat island

by | 22-08-2017 03:18

People that have read the title may ask themselves the same question that I asked myself in the past. What is an urban heat island? Well, you are about to find out.

An urban heat island occurs when human activity cause the rise of the temperature of an area when compared to its surrounding. A prime example of this are cities. These differences in temperatures can change according to whether it is day or night or according to the seasons.

But what effect does this have on nearby animals and ecosystems. Studies have shown that it can alter water quality which affects the diversity of living organisms in bodies of water. But not only does it have an effect on animals, it deteriorates human health increasing heat strokes in big cities.

Due to these different observations there have been different strategies that aim to solve the problem. Among these are rooftop gardens, using other kinds of concrete, planting more trees and creating the so-called "white roofs". These have other added benefits and it may seem cities may take initiatives to decrease the effects and the urban heat island.
