Renewables in the Philippines

by Bam Azores | 09-08-2017 00:08

In the Philippines now, we are having what the new administration calls the Golden Age of Infrastructure. The tagline is Build, Build, Build! These are exciting times with more new roads, bridges, railroads, airports, etc.

But there is another tagline that I've been hearing a lot nowadays and that is Push, Push, Push for Renewables. The National Renewable Energy Board (NREB) is pushing for the increase of the power generation mix to include renewables up to 35% by the year 2030.

One way of pushing this with the implementation of the Renewables Portfolio Standards which mandates that a certain percentage of energy source should come from renewable energy sources.

Another way of pushing for renewables is through the Green Energy Option of the Department of Energy which is a mechanism where customers can request that their electricity will be sourced specifically from renewables like solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, bagasse, etc.

Government and private companies are also focusing on energizing off grid islands like Mindoro, Palawan, Catanduanes, Romblon, Tablas and Siquijor. These fall under the Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) and are best served by renewable energy sources.
