RESOURCES DEPLETION IN IVORY COAST

by | 25-07-2017 19:12

Ivory Coast, a western African country is not away from the resources depletion noticed today in the world. The country is losing several resources which the life of today and tomorrow of its population depends on. The worse is that it is the most vital ones which are disappearing. Which resources are going at extinction today in Ivory Coast? What efforts can be done to replenish the resources which we are losing today?

In Ivory Coast the first resource which will certainly no longer exist in the ten upcoming years is the forest. In 1960, we were at 16 million hectares of forest in the country, but today we are at less than 2 million hectares of forest. This lost of the forest is seriously affecting people life like non productivity of crops therefore increasing poverty and hunger among the populations. The second major resource which is disappearing is water. In fact, the rain falling which highly depends on the forest is becoming scarce is many regions of the country. For in the northern, East-northern and West-northern parts of the country, it is almost impossible to get rain during one month in the year. Thirdly, there are several animal species which are becoming difficult to find. For example, the Elephants, the Rhinos and other species are disappearing at a high rate. And this affects the biodiversity of our nature. Therefore, we can still do something to avoid complete resources depletion in the nearest future.

Due to the fact that every citizen will undergo the consequences of resources depletion, it is important to notify that despite our status in the community, we are all called to take action. As governors of the country, the government should restlessly get engaged in protecting resources. For example, the government can create more national parks to protect the species in danger. The government should also forbid totally corporate to stop cutting trees. Also, those corporate which have the license to cut tress shall plant one tree to replace each tree cut down. Finally, the government should encourage corporate to fulfill their societal responsibilities by investing mainly in the environment. In addition, civil society actors whatever their field of action should dedicate a time to the protection of the environment through at least sensitization activities. Individuals have to take care of their own environment where they live and use responsibly the resources they have access to. A national campaign about planting tree and taking care of planted tree should be organized each year by NGOs, environmental youth activists and the government.
