As part of the fight against Climate Change,  I joined the Centre for Environmental Research and Policy Analysis (CERPA) and the Alliance for Environmental Intervention (AfEI) to embarked on the One Child, One Tree project in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Forestry Commission on 9th June, 2017. The programme was hosted in the Haatso Community – a suburb of the Ga East Municipal area.

Two schools Papao Community Basic School and the Calvary Presbyterian Basic School, were the beneficiaries of the eventful programme, which was also graced by the Assembly Member of the area. 

During this eventful programme, the pupils of participating schools were educated on the importance of trees to man and the environment, and the need to protect them and or plant a tree if possible (an edible one or an ornamental). Speaking at the programme, in both schools, the Alliance for Environmental team encouraged the pupils not to allow their status or ages be a hindrance to the part they can play in the fight against Climate Change. It was further stressed that their roles in this great adventure is vital, as they are great agents of change and also could have a bigger impact on adults alike.

Speaking at Papao Community Basic School, Twum, a facilitator from CERPA recounted his childhood experience of the Birim River which has now been drastically polluted by illegal miners ?galamseyers? around the area. He entreated the pupils there to be good stewards of nature, as it supports our existence here on earth.

The programme was ended with the planting of some species of Terminalia muntalis (Umbrella tree) in both Papao Community, and Calvary Presbyterian Basic Schools.
