MAY THEMATIC REPORT [Eco-friendly Urban Technology]

by Godfred Owusu | 07-05-2023 15:01

Because of excessive resource use, fast urbanization, a sharp rise in population, and a matching rise in the number of urban areas, the world is currently experiencing numerous economic and environmental problems. The expansion of the industrial and technological sectors has a significant impact on these problems. As a result, the phrase "green technology" developed to refer to a method of resolving these problems that emphasizes sustainable growth on all fronts. It appears to be a very efficient instrument for contemporary urban planning, taking into consideration all planning factors, including infrastructure, industry, energy, telecommunications, and other key areas in cities. These innovations in environmentally friendly technology frequently deal with issues like energy efficiency, recycling, health and safety, renewable resources, and more. Numerous technological advancements that reduce adverse environmental effects and propose fresh strategies for achieving sustainable development are referred to as "green technologies."

The purpose of environmentally friendly technology is to protect and preserve the environment while helping repair the damage done to it in the past. Interestingly, consumers play a huge role in shaping sustainability trends. Environmentally friendly technology, or green technology, can be outlined in a company¡¯s environmental, sustainability, and governance (ESG) statement. Socially responsible investors may narrow down their prospective investments to companies committed to utilizing or producing environmentally friendly technology, while consumers may choose to support companies that are committed to promoting environmentally friendly practices. Some of the eco-friendly technologies are discussed below:

Use of renewable energy other than fossil fuels. According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)fossil fuel combustion and industrial processes contributing about 78% of the total greenhouse gas emissions increase from 1970 to 2011. Burning fossil fuels causes enormous amounts of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that absorbs heat and contributes to global warming, to be released into the atmosphere. Many businesses are looking for more environmentally friendly alternative energy sources that are renewable sources of energy. In 2021 the Government of Ghana signed a bilateral agreement on climate change with Switzerland under the Paris Agreement on climate change. The agreement between Switzerland and Ghana will enable the development of solar energy projects for commercial and industrial clients, thus enabling Ghanaian companies to act on climate change. In accordance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Under this partnership, at least five million Ghanaian households will benefit from environmentally friendly cookers and solar-generated electricity.

Again, The use of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are among the most stunning examples of ecologically friendly technology to date. Electric vehicles have lower carbon footprints than cars that run on gasoline or diesel fuel. This revolutionary means of transportation emits fewer greenhouse gases than traditional automobiles. When generating electricity, discharges are lower than when burning other fuels. You may reduce greenhouse gas emissions even further by charging your electric vehicle with renewable energy. Electric vehicles also have the power to somehow mitigate noise pollution. Less engine noise creates a more tranquil environment, which benefits human health. Some people may even be genetically predisposed to being more sensitive to motor pollution. Therefore, electric vehicles reduce emission from transportation.

And Green technology for water treatment. Water is one of the most valuable resources, and it must be free of pollutants to avoid risks to humans and our environment, Water treatment methods exist in traditional ways but are not sufficient to eliminate the pollutants completely which requires the development of alternatives to water purification, solar energy, which is a green technology to get rid of water pollution. There are four methods for solar powered water purification, Solar water treatment systems: the water purification system is based on the use of battery operated on solar energy, and the battery can work for three days even without sunlight, Solar water disinfection: water is sterilized with plastic bottles and exposed to sunlight for six hours ,Solar water pasteurization: bacteria are killed in solar heated stoves, Solar distillation: It is used to desalinate sea water and make it drinkable.

To conclude, eco-friendly technology can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve resources such as water and energy, reduce waste, pollution, and other types of environmental damage, improve public health by reducing air pollution and toxic chemical exposure, and contribute to sustainable development in urban centers/cities.
