[April thematic report] Solutions for diminishing air pollution

by Seoyoon Min | 09-05-2023 14:38

With the air pollution getting worse and worse, green infrastructure and carbon capture and storage is receiving spotlight for the solutions to diminish this severe problem.

Green infrastructure is an inter-connected network of open, green spaces that provide a range of ecosystem services. It works to reduce urban heat, improve air and water quality, which can ultimately elevate the overall wellbeing of humans. For example, there are green roofs. Vegetative rooftop or green roof is a vegetative layer grown on a rooftop and it can reduce the energy consumption and stormwater runoff. They provide shade, removes heat from the air and reduces the temperature of the roof surface. By lowering air conditioning demand, green roofs can decrease the associated air pollution and green house gas emissions from conventional power sources.

Additionally, there is carbon capture and storage. It is a technology that aims to capture carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes or power generation facilities and store it in a way that prevents it from entering the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide is captured and transferred into restorative farming techniques. The biggest advantage of this method is that the co2 can be permanently stored in geological formations. The International Energy Agency estimates that CCS could help in removing as much as 20% of the total co2 emissions.
