On 10^th May 2017, I had an opportunity to join members from Family and Friends of Rivers and Lakes in Zimbabwe on a tree planting exercise along the Shagashe River.  This place has been utilised in improper way in the sense that people cut trees along this river so that they can use the land for farming. These people have also deliberately broke the sewage pipes so that they can use sewage for farming. As farming is very good for our livelihoods, but it must be done in such a way that is sustainable and be able to conserve the environment. The sewage goes directly to the river which affect the ecosystem in the water. The sewage also contribute to the growth of the water hyacinth on top the water which in a long run these water hyacinth cover the water body and make the  species in water suffocate due to lack of enough oxygen for respiration. Some people down the river, especially in villages use the water for washing, some for drinking, which is a threat to their health. The trees which were cut made the land bare hence increase soil erosion which in turn can course siltation of the river. So we went there to plant trees along this rivers so that to prevent soil erosion and to monitor the sewage pipes so that proper action can be taken to repair them.
