April Thematic Report: Air Pollution

by Cheha Paik | 30-04-2023 22:12

Air pollution is a growing concern worldwide as it poses a significant threat to human health and the environment. While carbon emissions are one of the most well-known forms of air pollution, there are many other types of pollutants that can have harmful effects on our health and the environment.

One such pollutant is nitrogen oxide (NOx). NOx is primarily produced from burning fossil fuels and other sources of emissions include transportation, power generation, and industrial processes. Similar to carbon emissions, NOx contains many negative impacts on both human health and the environment. Exposure to this gas can cause similar respiratory problems to carbon dioxide such as bronchitis and asthma. When released into the atmosphere, NOx can contribute to the production of smog and ozone, which can reduce visibility and harm plant/animal life. Furthermore, NOx can react with other compounds to form acid rain, which can significantly harm environmental locations such as forests, lakes, and rivers.

To reduce NOx emissions, countries worldwide have implemented regulations that require the use of low-combustion technologies that contribute to NOx emissions. Additionally, advancements in technology, such as electric vehicles, can help reduce not only NOx emissions but other harmful substances.

All in all, while carbon emissions are the focus of air pollution, it is important to know more about other emissions such as nitrogen oxide.
