Swimming into a water crisis

by | 27-03-2017 22:23

Imagine that all the water in the world is bottled in 10 bottles. The water available for human consumption is contained in three bottles, of which only one of them is accessible because of its liquid state and the two others are frozen. The availability of water at a global level and its access at the local level are characteristics that are hampered each year by the effects of climate change on this resource necessary for the life of living beings.

Now, have you ever wondered why you have a lot of water? There may be many answers, however, at a global level it's surprising. Each year the effects of climate change become visible in the form of droughts, floods or storms, causing disasters that limit human well-being and development. For example, it is recorded that every year, about two million people die from lack of potable water 300 million more children than girls living in areas at high risk of flooding and 663 million live without a source of drinking water close to home (WHO).

Governments, particularly in developing countries, are facing a big challenge. With the number of human settlements rising significantly in urban areas, each time the demand for large water flows is needed to meet the diverse needs of more demanding populations. The mismanagement of the water in the occasional temples, later, an economic crisis of this resource that offers abundant rations of water to certain localities and very limited rations to others. When we raise the crisis of the water resource in a world with an area of 󈒒% water, it is difficult for us to imagine that such an abundant resource may be in danger. Both in the country and in the world, the Dominican Republic, located on a small Caribbean island surrounded by large mares and oceans, the security and scarcity of the water resource is a subject that causes great confusion within the population Unleashing a culture of waste, pollution and devaluation of such an important natural heritage.

What can you do to make the population a scarce resource that you consider abundantly? It is a task of all the citizens, mainly yours, to carry out actions that allow to reduce the water footprint. Promoting a culture of savings among citizens seems to be one of the most important actions, however, its applicability is usually restricted to certain sectors. From there, we must be in charge of generating mechanisms of public awareness and participation in issues that, in some way or another, with repercussions on their lives, such as the water issue. I can not continue ignoring the reality of these men, women, children and girls who lack this resource and that by 2025, according to WHO, represent the exorbitant figure of the two with people with absolute water shortage.

Are you the water of need? On this International Water Day, I like the things I like and those that interest me about the importance of this valuable resource in your life and in the lives of those 663 million people who use them to access the most water source. Nearby What Importance will you give a now of this resource? How can I take the treatment of consciousness and people as possible sea on the need to preserve this natural heritage? And why not? Start taking care of it from my home.
