![]() Waste segregation, by definition is the process of dividing garbage and waste products in an effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials. When I was a child, I kept wondering why the environment around me was not clean and was littered with waste. I understood the severity of the problems of the environment and noticed that not carrying out waste segregation was one of the main problems in many cities in India. I realized that:
Waste segregation has to be dealt with immediate effect as waste is generated every single day. According to a study conducted, the amount of waste generated in urban areas per day in India is 115,000 tonnes which is equal to 115,000 full grown polar bears. The amount of recyclable and reusable material in that 115,000 tonnes of waste is huge and the benefits of recycling and reusing that waste is even bigger. Slowly, India has started to realize the consequences of misusing natural resources and polluting the environment. People have started to take initiatives to solve environmental problems at the local level and started creating mass awareness among fellow Indians through social media and awareness camps. As per the well known saying, ?Charity begins at home?, I decided that I needed to initiate the practice of waste segregation in my residential building. With the help of a few residents and a lot of planning, we have already started to put this project of waste segregation into action. The details of which will be covered in my next report.
